194. Pushed

Bridgeport, present day...
"There, you look gorgeous," Eloise smiled sadly at Leigh's sleeping form. She'd just brushed her hair, washed her face and dabbed some lip gloss on her lips.

Leigh wasn't a diva, but she liked to look her best. Eloise didn't know any woman who didn't. And with the endless visitors pouring in she knew Leigh would freak if they saw her all bruised up and sickly.

To be honest though doing up her best friend was more self-serving. She was trying to distract herself and block out her guilt-ridden thoughts.
Maybe her guilt was misplaced, maybe it wasn't but Eloise blamed herself for Leigh's accident. She thought if she'd gone to lunch with her like she was supposed to Leigh would not have had any reason to drive to her office park to see her and that maniac driver would not have run her over.
"Okay, it's working! For months you've wanted my attention, you have it now. If you wake up I'll tell you everything," Eloise whispered.

Her words seemed to be the cue Leigh had been waiting for; she opened her eyes then and smiled at her.

"You sly devil, you tricked me," Eloise laughed, but her eyes were moist with tears of relief.

"No, I didn't-" Leigh tried to talk but her face hurt, her throat felt dry and parched.

Eloise pressed the red button on the cord hanging on the side of the bed. Within a few minutes two nurses (an odd looking pair, one old and skinny and the other young and plump) rushed into the room.
Eloise excused herself while they attended to Leigh. She ran smack into William Thornton at the door.

"Leigh’s awake, the nurses are busy with her right now," she smiled at him.

He nodded, but didn't smile back and in her heart she knew why. He knew what she was, she could see it in the way he looked at her, it wasn't outright contempt, but it was close.
Without saying anything Thornton took her hand and led her to the cafeteria, which was surprisingly empty for this time of the day. But he still sat them in one corner of the room, as far from the cashier as possible, he obviously didn't want their chat to be overhead by curious ears.
"For all it's worth, it wasn't Krisis," Thornton began.

"Then how did you know?" Eloise asked. Thornton explained how he'd narrowed down his search.

"It could be Devon," she pointed out.

"Yes, it could be," he agreed, but in the same breath he went in for the kill. "However it’s not Devon. Your fiancé is human. I bumped into him last night as he was leaving his work place. I picked up the scent you left in Leigh's room on him also, but it was faint. Not as overpowering as it is right now."
"What are you going to do to me?" Eloise asked in a small voice. She didn't expect to get caught, especially by the same man who'd put a bounty on her head.

"I don't know," his reply was surprising, but not comforting.

"Are you going to kill me? Am I going to die?" Eloise was almost in tears now. She hated what she'd become, but she didn’t want to die.

Thornton carefully weighed his words before he spoke, "Leigh is fond of you. And so is Krisis.  He asked me to back off and I would have if I didn't have such a bad record with the Council. I hate to do this but I have an obligation to bring you in."
"But I didn't do anything wrong!" Eloise argued.

"I beg to differ," Thornton retorted. Without waiting for her comeback he went ahead and explained the Council's reasons for wanting to get rid of her.

"Those are unfounded fears. I don't hunt humans!" Eloise’s denial was loud enough to attract the cashier’s attention.

Thornton gave her an icy look, “Sure go ahead and tell her what you are.”

“I’m sorry,” Eloise put up her hands and pushed away from the table, her chair scraped loudly on the floor as she leapt to her feet and rushed out of the cafeteria.
Thornton caught up with her with little effort and backed her against the wall in the corridor.

“Let go of me!” She hissed under her breath.

“If you do exactly as I say, there’s a good chance you’ll come out of this unscathed-”
Eloise didn’t want to listen to him, but she found herself paying attention to his offer.

“Let me get this straight, I have to attend a hearing and plead my case?” She asked after some time.

Thornton nodded.
“And if I don’t?” Eloise crossed her arms over her chest defensively.

“You’ll be dead by sunrise.” The unwavering look in his eyes told her he meant every word.

“What if they don’t believe me? What if they don’t believe that I don’t hunt humans and that man at Waylon’s Haunt was an accident, what then?”

“You’d better do a very good job of convincing them. Your life depends on it,” Thornton reminded her before he walked away.
Eloise dazedly found her way to Leigh’s ward. She was a little bewildered to find the room buzzing with their family and friends. Everyone was so busy fussing over Leigh they didn’t see her hovering near the door, they didn’t even notice when she let herself out.
Outside the hospital she called Devon and asked him to go straight home from work, she had something to tell him.

“I have to see Leigh. Can’t it wait?” Devon asked on his end.

Eloise assured him it couldn’t; their whole future depended on this talk…

  1. "I beg to differ" Hmmm, little harsh Thorn!

Even though it was the head of the council speaking and not the now-caring-Thorry we all love! It was still a bit harsh.

And the 'I'll explain-moment' has now escaped El's grasp. Way to flood the room Val! Now she may not get to tell Leigh before the trial and who knows how that'll turn out!

    1. I think Thornton handled that diplomatically. He could have been harsher and just moved straight to her execution.

True, she may not get to speak to Leigh again.

      Thanks for reading!

  2. oh my... I sincerely hope the council members are in good moods when El pleads her case... I'm so glad she was about to come clean with Leigh before they were interrupted. Can't wait to see what Devon says...

  3. I'm glad Leigh has fianlly woken up - and so has Eloise. It's good that she has finally told Devon and not kept him in the dark, because he needs to know. I really hope for her sake that the trial goes well because her life will be on the line if something goes wrong. I'm also happy that Thornton is protecting her for the moment - but how long can he shield her from the council? Another amazing chapter Val more, more, more when you can!

    1. Yeah, El has woken up, but a little too late IMO. She hasn't told Devon yet, but will in the next update. Thornton will try to find an amicable solution for all concerned.

      Thanks for reading!

  4. so glad Leigh is awake. Thornton I swear a man (dad) shouldn't be that sexy. but I digress. :) I like the way he handled that. Hopefully this will be the diplomatic way and the council believes her. She hasn't had an incident since that night that should count for something.

The talk with Devon. I hope it goes well and she will still need to tell Leigh.

    1. LOL, you and Pixx are crushing hard on Vampire Bill.

I also think he handled the situation with Eloise well, he could have been difficult and just brought her in, but out of respect for Krisis and Leigh he didn't. I ahree, the fact that she hasn't killed anyone since then will influence the Council's decision.

The talk with Devon is coming right up.

      Thanks for reading.

  5. Eloise will have to tell Leigh everything now. OMG Thornton isn't giving her much choice. Now the question is how will Devon take it.

    Loved it :)

    1. Yeah, there aren't that many options unfortunately. Interesting question you have there.

  6. Well, it's out now, Eloise.
I can't wait to see Devon's reaction, and how they'll handle this hearing.

I'm glad Thornton is giving her that chance at least, and didn't just kill her as soon as he knew. He's become quite the devoted father, risking his position for Krisis and Leigh's sake.

    1. Yeah it is, and in some way I think it's a huge relief for her.

The talk with Devon is coming right up.

I agree, about Thornton, he is devoted to his kids, for Krisis and Leigh's sake he chose to go the diplomatic route.

      Thanks for reading.

  7. Bad internet connection so gonna be fast. I'm glad that Thornton is at least trying, glad that Leigh is awake, hoping that everything goes okay for El.

  8. At least it is out now. I don't see the council being really understanding though. Unless they can think of a way to use her to get to the bigger wolf family, I fear for Eloise. Quite the turning point for her. And Devon, 'can't it wait' :( your wife needs you, your sister is surrounded by her family. Sheesh. I can see that though.... great update and need to read more soon.:)

    1. I think the fact that El has kept a low profile and hasn't killed anyone since the dude at Waylon's Haunt may just work in her favor when it comes to the Council. It is a big turning point for her, if only she'd gone to lunch with Leigh, she might have found herself not pushed into a corner like this.

      Thanks for reading.

    1. Yes, her life is about to come undone. And yes we will meet her maker soon, I think mid season 6.

  10. Finally caught up on the last few chapters! Wow! Talk about a lot! I'll have to admit, Thornton is growing on me, the man can keep his cool regardless of the situation! Krisis has definitely matured, while he lost his cool for a moment (as expected) he never lost his reason. Ariel is quite the little psychic, she's going to be quite the individual as she gets older. So many things I'd love to comment on but I really don't want to write a novel of a comment. Simpy put, "well done Val!" I look forward to the next chapter.

    1. Thanks for catching up.

Yes, it's one of the things I admire about Thornton, his ability to remain detached in unstable situations.

I think you may be right about Ariel, she'll be unstoppable.

      Thanks for reading!

  11. Hmm well she doesn't really have many options does she? I could understand if she doesn't trust Thornton, and it's not even about trusting him but once the other Vampires know who she is and what she is then will she ever be safe!?!?

    1. No, she doesn't have that many options really. Her safety really depends on her ability to control herself at this point.

      Thanks for reading!

  12. I hope that El can convince them that she isn't a danger. At least they are giving her a chance. So happy that Leigh is going to be okay.

I especially loved that scene with all of her family around her in the hospital room! You did a wonderful job on that hospital Val!

I'm glad that I have another chapter to read so that I can see Devon's reaction now!

  13. Poor Eloise, I wonder if he would save her if the hearing went bad. Thornton must know Krisis and Leigh would never forgive him. It's so sad that nobody saw her leaving. I am glad Leigh is more awake now. Nice picture of all of them by the bed.

  14. I knew he had it figured out, it was just when would he approach it. I'm hoping the council listens to every word she has to say, she really is a victim in all of this=/....edenz~
