Summary: A glimpse of Leigh's and Devon's childhood
________

Bridgeport, present day...
A gentle knock on her door pulled her from the window. Eloise waddled in a second later. She was almost seven months along in her pregnancy, and she complained constantly of being exhausted. She wished the baby was out already.
“Are you okay?” Eloise asked as she eased herself onto the arm chair.

“Yeah, I’m good,” she replied, watching her rub her baby bump.
As big as her friend was, Eloise was still the picture of a healthy pregnancy. She looked gorgeous, and Leigh had never seen her brother, and best friend, so happy. It was a magical time, and she was glad she came home just in time to experience it with them.
“Oh my goodness,” Eloise cried, a shocked look on her face.

“What’s wrong?” Leigh asked curiously.

“I think she’s excited to have you home. She’s been kicking nonstop since you came back,” Eloise explained, rubbing her tummy. “She knows you’re back!”
“Can I feel her?” Leigh asked.

Eloise rose from the chair, and placed Leigh’s hand on her bump.

“Whoa,” Leigh laughed softly as she felt the baby’s kicks. At first, the nudges were gentle, but they grew firmer and more frequent.
“I told you she knows you’re back. It’s good to have you home Leigh. Don’t ever disappear on us again.” Eloise drew her in her arms, and held on tightly to her.

“Hey, it’s okay. I’m back now. I’m not going anywhere,” Leigh assured her.
“Remember that time you ran away because your parents were fighting so much? For hours we looked for you until Devon suggested we should check the school’s playground?” Eloise took her down memory lane and they both laughed at the memory now.
But Leigh remembered it wasn’t a great time back then for her and Devon…

At fifteen her brother, understood what was going on; he saw the hate between Lisa and Mark, their parents.
But her twelve year old self didn’t, and all she’d wanted then was for everyone to be happy.
The fights were ugly and it didn’t take long for the verbal abuse to get physical. Random, little things would set Mark off, like dinner not being ready on time or his shirt not ironed properly.
One Saturday, Mark beat up Lisa so bad she had to spend a week in hospital, missing Leigh’s 13th birthday party. It was around that time that Leigh decided to run away.
After that first incident, Mark promised not to hit their mom again. But Leigh and Devon soon found out their father was not only a woman basher, but a liar also. Over the next few years, Lisa still had inexplicable bruises all over her face, and they knew she wore long sleeved clothes to cover up their father’s brutality.
The neighbors knew what was going on but they chose not to get involved. Rose, Eloise’ mom, was the only one who tried her damnedest to get Lisa to leave Mark for good. But her efforts were in vain, and none of them understood the hold Mark had over Lisa.

At some point, Leigh, Devon and Lisa stayed with Eloise and her parents, until Mark came knocking, bearing flowers and gifts, and promising to change. Lisa impulsively shipped all of them back home. For weeks they lived in perfect bliss, until the next cycle of abuse began.

As devastating as it was for Leigh and Devon to come home from school and find their parents’ brains splattered all over the living room walls and floors, they couldn’t say it was unexpected. They all knew that’s where it would end. The cops ruled it as a suicide pact, but Leigh and Devon knew better. Mark had promised, on more than one occasion, to kill their mom.

With no living relatives, Leigh was taken in by Eloise’s parents and they put her through her senior year of high school, while Devon completed his degree in Music…
“Hey, where did you go?” Eloise asked, noting the pained look in her eyes.

“Nowhere happy,” Leigh replied softly. She hated thinking about her parents. They were one thing she never talked about with Krisis. He’d asked on more than one occasion, and she’d given him the bare minimum, the lie she always gave to everyone brave enough to ask about her parents. They died in a car accident. End of story.

Krisis didn’t know about the abuse, or the fact that she was the one who found her parents’ bodies, or that she still had nightmares about that time. He had enough shit going on his life, he didn’t need to know about hers too.
“Speaking about that summer, do you remember James Lockhart, your first crush?” Leigh laughed suddenly, an attempt to lighten the sad mood in the room. Eloise rolled her eyes. She hated being reminded of the many frogs she’d had to kiss before she found prince Devon.

Leigh reached for her photo album inside a shoe box from under her bed, and they both sat down on the soft mattress and leafed through the book.
Devon, watching football in the living room, heard their happy laughter, in between their girlish whispers. He smiled to himself, thankful Leigh was home safe, grateful to have her in one piece, and somewhat happy.

His life at that moment was perfect; he had a gorgeous girlfriend, a baby on the way, and his sister was home.
Oh, and he had football and beer. There was nothing else he wanted…

Life was great.

  1. WOW! Just...wow! These last two prompts have made things that were already clear, 10 times more clear. That's why Dev is so protective of her! That's why they have the close relationship they have! I guess Krisis isn't the only one who needs to open up! How can she really expect him to turn her and she can't share that part of her life with him? How can he expect to have her forever if he keeps putting distance between them! YIKES! I need Eloise to shake them for me or something! Krimsyn, JD, someone!!

That is a very sad memory to have! I'm happy the three of them have each other now. A new family to help ease the pain of the past.

So emotional and wonderful! Great prompts.

P.s: I understand all too well, what Leigh feels when it comes to the situation with Lily! I could hug her!

  2. Qui,

I'm so thrilled these two prompts explained Devon and Leigh's relationship. That's what I was aiming for, and I wasn't sure if it would come through.

True, Leigh still has a lot to tell Krisis. But she thinks he doesn't know when in actual fact he does. He did ask Ben to do a background check on her before they started dating. I mentioned this in the prompt on Sloth. But the fact that he keeps asking suggests he wants to hear it from her.
The next prompt should please you greatly then, something's got to give and it does in this one I guess.

You're right, they have each other now, and the little papa to look forward to.

    Thank you!

I was hoping her ambivalent feelings towards Lily would show too. As much as she loved the little girl, a big part of her won't stop thinking "if only things were different" She'll always be a reminder of the life Krisis had with another woman before she came along. And she does understand it's in his past, it still doesn't erase the hurt though.

  3. Awww. Thank God they had each other to get through such an awful time. Now, it makes me think back to when Tamaryn was trying to push Leigh out.

It was very big of Leigh to try and find a kind thought for Dr.Evil - she's a better person than I! That hate she felt for Jackie is going to be a big obstacle between her and Lily, plus with her own relationship with Krisis in a gray area, she really CAN'T step up to parent her.

I'm betting the first time "Mommy" rolls out of Lily's mouth to Leigh, all that stuff will disappear.

    Time heals all.

    Great prompt!

  4. Ok that was probably the sweetest chapter in ages. I actually loved the way you portrayed all of that backstory...It was sad! I can't even imagine how Leigh must have felt about that...Poor her...

But best friendshipism wins through most (love is the only one that wins through All...) so we got to happy times soon again right?

Im SO proud of Leight to actually be able to find something good to think about the Evil Bitch Jackie...She's a really good main character because she's got anough heart to forigve people like That. I hope she can stop feeling cheated from her lack of Krisis baby soon...?

That was an amazingly un-subtle-y-subtle hinty thing...HINT HINT.

    =D

Wonderful chapter, and the most charming portrayal of the prompt. Ok, I have just used my word of the day (charming) for the third time today! Me and my friend are doing this thing where we use the word we pick out of the dictionary at least three times a day...It's weird but fun! /blathering...

  5. I know fully understand why Dev is so protective of her, and I guess I would be as well.

I understand why Leigh doesn't exactly want to tell Krisis these things...it's hard airing your dirty laundry to people...even those you trust so I can understand Leigh's hesitation. But Krisis does need to hear it from her and I am sure in time she will tell him...when she is ready.

It's great seeing Leigh home and able to laugh and enjoy herself with Eloise, I think she desperately needed something good to think about.

  6. Aww, that warm my heart.

  7. Jill,

Glad all the pieces are falling into place now where Dev's protective streak is concerned.

LOL. Agreed. I don't think I would have had anything good to say about the woman who erased my memories and stole two months of life and then had a baby with the man I love. But that's Leigh. That's what makes me love her to bits. She always finds good in people. True, her negative feelings for Jackie will affect her relationship with Lily and Krisis putting distance between them isn't exactly helping them both to bond. And she'd love nothing more than to get to know his little girl.

That's too cute. I'd like that, Lily calling Leigh mommy. I'll have to weave it into the story.

    Thank you!

  8. Eni,

They didn't have a great upbringing, but that experience brought Devon and Leigh closer and that's why he goes apeshit over the thought of her being in danger or something.

Yep, we go to happy times soon. The dark cloud between Leigh and Krisis is almost literally over. And the good times will start rolling in.

Yeah, it's typically Leigh to find good in people, even when they don't deserve it. LOL.

I love your hint hint...and all I can say is my lips are sealed :)

Thank you. I love that word thing you and your friend have going on. I'll have to try it with my friends too. And I'm probably way behind on your legacy :( But I'll catch up soon, on scouts honor.

  9. Ny Girl,

I'm thrilled Dev's overbearing behavior makes sense.

It's mostly shame that makes her not want to talk about it, and the pity she'd get once people know. And it's a dark period in her life she'd like to forget. As much as Krisis wants to hear it from her, he won't push it. He understands all too well the need to keep secrets.

She did. Eloise and Devon remind her how great and normal her life is, and now with Baby Blake on the way, they are all pretty much excited. It will be a new chapter for all three, parenthood, and let's hope they all take well to it.

  11. You know, sometimes it is the simple things in life that can bring true contentment, wonderfully shown in this prompt. Love the last shot of Devon.

And to have that juxtapositioned with those stark flashbacks make it all the more poignant and emotional.
    Well done.

I will catch up on anymore updates when I return in mid-April, Cheers Val.

  12. Karen, thank you. Yeah, it's the little things sometimes that brings us joy.

Not sure if you're going on vacation, but if you are, enjoy, have fun, rest and do everything you don't get a chance to do everyday, and when you come back, I'll be ready for more awesome chapters from you.

    Thanks for reading.

Glad Leigh's home for good.. can't imagine how happy Eloise and the baby must be. A nice glimpse down memory lane.. no wonder Dev is such a good brother <3
Poor Lisa.. if she'd just leave Mark before it continued to spiral out of control~

    Off to read more
