Summary: Eloise and Devon welcome their son into the world
________
Bridgeport, present day...
On a bitterly cold winter morning, after eleven hours in labor, Eloise was exhausted and ready to call it quits. Her voice had grown hoarse, her tears had run dry and she just wanted the baby out of her.
“Push, Eloise! Push!” Devon urged her for the millionth time since she’d been wheeled into the delivery room. He’d insisted on being present for the birth, and after the first hour of Eloise’s pained screams he’d wanted to run away and let the doctors do their job, but the threatening look in her eyes had told him, very clearly, he wasn’t going anywhere; he’d live through the pain with her, and welcome their son into the world.
“What do you think I am? I am not a fucking machine!” Eloise screamed right back.

“Ms. Jones, really, you have to try harder for the baby!” Dr. Mason cooed in a gentle voice.
“I’m tired! Why don’t you push?” Eloise yelled at her as well.
“Oh my GAWD!” She pushed as hard as she could, clutching Devon’s hand tightly.

“You’re going to pay for this!” She whispered, gritting her teeth and making threatening faces at him. With one sharp scream, loud enough to wake Jacqueline Steinberg from her grave, Eloise pushed one final time.
“There he is!” One of the nurses swarming the room announced excitedly. For 30 seconds there was a moment of blissful silence. Eloise lay back on the pillows, with her eyes closed, her face contorted in pain, Devon, rubbed her forehead gently, and Dr. Mason held the baby carefully in her hands.
Everyone in the room wanted the silence to last a little longer, but baby Blake Starlington had different ideas; apparently 30 seconds was enough time for everyone to get used to his arrival. He screamed his little lungs out. Devon, after eleven hours of being sworn and screamed at, knew where he got his healthy lungs from.
Baby Blake continued to scream until Eloise demanded to have him. The moment she held her son, Eloise was lost in a world of love, and tenderness. At that moment, she forgot everything and everyone.
Nurse Susan Foster came into the room then to take the baby for his tests. Devon grudgingly handed the baby over after many assurances from the doctors that the baby was in good hands.
A little while later Eloise and Blake were wheeled into one of the private recovery rooms. Her friends and family members were allowed a few minutes with her and the baby; she was exhausted, and the pain medication she’d taken was making her sleepy.
Devon held his son proudly, showing him off to their friends and family. He wanted to stay a little while longer with Eloise and the baby, but he had to go home to pick up Eloise’s bag; they needed the baby items she’d packed for the birth.
As the small group left the ward, none of them took an interest in the dark haired, plain looking, filing clerk, gossiping with Nurse Susan, who was now clearly off duty, judging by the casual clothes she had on, the only giveaway that she had ever been on duty were the thick soled hospital shoes still on her feet.

None of them paid attention, except Devon. The clerk looked familiar. But the green eyes and brown hair threw him off…
