Bridgeport, present day

“Morning Dr. Steinberg, would you like your breakfast now?” Steven asked courteously when she padded into the kitchen. She’d slept in. Something she never did when she was at her best. She was always the first one at the hospital, and almost always the last to leave. But the past few weeks had been unkind to her. She hated being pregnant. She felt sluggish and fat, and looked ghastly.

“No Steven, but a glass of water will do.” Jacqueline waved him off, with an equally polite tone of voice. They’d known each other for fifteen years, and he had warmed her bed sheets a few times. But they still didn’t have the close bond most butlers form with their masters or mistresses.

She plopped down on the chair. Wordlessly, the butler set the glass of ice-cold water in front of her, and hovered around her like a mother hen.

She played around with the newspaper for a bit, all the while carefully appraising Steven.

He had a decent body…Not god-like, like Krisis’. And he was passably okay in bed…Not exhilarating like Krisis. Shit, did everything have to be about Krisis? She mused crossly.

Her eyes fell back on the newspaper.

Page 1, nothing interesting, the hospital was robbed again, blood was missing, and the graveyard was vandalized last night, no doubt by teenage hooligans up to mischief.

What is this world coming to?

Page 2, A toothy, seven year old girl made it to the finals of Bridgeport’s bake-off. Apparently her muffins were selling like hot cakes.

Why was this news again?

Finally she jumped all the way to the society pages, at the back of the newspaper. And she let out a blood curdling scream.

“Is everything okay Dr. Steinberg?” Steven enquired when he ran back into the room. Her scream was loud enough to wake the dead.

“No Steven, nothing’s okay! But you can’t help me!” She shrieked at him, and threw the glass of water on the window pane. She watched the colorless liquid slowly form a puddle around the glass pieces, making a mess on the floor. Without uttering a word, Steven went about the task of cleaning up the results of her anger. He knew when to keep quiet, and this was one of those times.

Krisis and his human were caught on camera, lip-locking in Shang Simla. And the headlines: From Bridgeport to Shang Simla, the romance continues.

Fuck that shit! She was carrying that bastard’s baby, and he was gallivanting all over the country with his human? Who the hell did he think he was?

She glanced at the picture again and she fumed anew. I should have let her die! She thought bitterly as she remembered how she’d nursed Leigh back to health after Vladimir had attacked her. For Krisis...She shouldn't have!
