93. Envy

Bridgeport, present day...

Eloise and Devon weren’t the only ecstatic couple in Bridgeport. Krimsyn and J.D. threw the mother of all engagement parties, the weekend after Devon and Eloise learned the news of their pregnancy. They would have had the party much sooner, but with Lily’s birth, and Leigh’s disappearance, their plans got sidetracked a little.

When Krisis arrived at the Flaming Flamingo, a nightclub in downtown, the party was in full swing. News of his sister’s engagement party had brought out all types; from fellow entertainers and wannabes, right through to groupies.


He didn’t know half the people in the room, and he didn’t care much for the other half. The music was loud to an unbearable point; alcohol and drugs flowed freely, and sex too. He shuddered when he thought of what was going on behind closed doors.

Not too long ago, before Leigh came along, this would have been his playground; he would have been in his element, crazy out of his head from a cocktail of drugs and blood, and right about now, he'd probably be getting head from a groupie in one of the club’s VIP rooms.

Tonight though, there was only one place he'd rather be...Home with Lily. But Krimsyn and J.D. had insisted he show up; they were sick of his near-recluse tendencies of late.


He didn't go out as much as before, preferring to stay home with his daughter. He still honored his public engagements, and PR events the band expected him to attend, but if it wasn't work related, he politely declined invitations to the endless parties.

His eyes wandered to the corner of the room, where Cameron, their keyboard artist, was snogging a pink-haired groupie. Deranged paparazzi merrily snapped shots of the two. Once again K-Infinity would be in the news, for all the wrong reasons.

Cameron saw he was being watched, and he winked at Krisis, a huge grin plastered on his face. His smile told Krisis he was taking his pink-haired fangirl home for dessert after the party. 

“There he is,” Jacqueline’s shrill voice stole his attention from the action on the couch, and Krisis immediately wanted to hide from her and the photographer trailing behind her.

There was no escaping her. Every corner he took, she was there; at the recording studio, in his home, everywhere, and she always used Lily as an excuse for her endless visits. She came on to him every chance she got too, shamelessly throwing herself at him. No matter how many times he told her there would never be anything between them again, Jacqueline still tried.

If anyone deserved an award for persistence, it was her. Krisis knew she wasn't on the guest list, but she’d mysteriously made her way into the “invite only” party. Krimsyn and J.D. were too wrapped up in each other’s kisses to care about gatecrashers, and as much as Krisis wanted to throw her out, it wasn’t his party; so he’d tolerate her for the evening.

Jacqueline persuaded him to pose for a few shots, and to avoid causing a scene, he obliged. The sooner he gave her what she wanted, the quicker she’d be out of his hair for the night. He let her hang on to his arm, and he stared blankly at the cameras, hating every second he was forced to spend in her company.

She, on the other hand, basked in her five minutes of fame and glory. She smiled broadly for the cameras, trailed her hands on his chest, and blew him endless kisses. The way she was carrying on, and if their social circle didn't know better, they’d think they were still together.

As soon as Jacqueline’s press conference was over Krisis made his grand escape, but it wasn’t long before Devon sought him out.

“Any news on Leigh?” Devon asked, handing him a drink.

Krisis thanked him for the drink, and he took a quick gulp from the glass.

Things between them were civil. They talked some, and they were always polite when they bumped into each other around town, which happened often since they were in the same industry and moved in the same social circle.

He couldn’t say he liked Devon, but if things were different, he was someone he would have liked to get to know…If things were different, and if he didn’t blame her for Leigh’s disappearance.

“No. No word. The call was routed through a few places, and Ben lost the trace in Twinbrook. But-" His voice trailed off, and he hesitated, wondering if he should tell Devon about the latest development in the search for his sister. The other man looked at him expectantly, and Krisis caved. 


"We received a tip-off this afternoon. A reporter has been trying to sell photos of Leigh he claims to have taken in Champs Les Sims two weeks ago. Ben's flying out tomorrow morning to check it out. And if it pans out, I'll join him. I didn't want to tell you, until we were sure...” He informed him, bracing himself for his wrath, convinced any second now Devon would remind him again how Leigh going MIA was his fault. He was pleasantly surprised when the other man nodded his understanding.

“Hang in there, he'll find her and bring her home. Have faith,” Devon gave him a friendly slap on the back, before walking away to find Eloise. Krisis was left wondering where Leigh’s real brother was. The old Devon would have cussed him out, and then throw a few punches in the mix…

He kind of liked this new Devon, and he knew he had his unborn baby to thank for his sudden maturity.

“Are you having fun?” Lola asked as he took a seat at the bar and ordered a drink. He stared blankly at her, before shaking his head sadly. He wasn’t having fun. He hadn’t had fun in a long time.

It was almost two months since Leigh left, and he couldn’t get over her. Despite his firm resolutions, on that crazy evening when he took the redhead back to his place, he couldn’t forget her. He couldn’t put her out of his mind. And he didn’t want to get over her...


He’d paid Ben more money to make sure he found her, and when they got wind of the news about the French reporter earlier that afternoon, the flames of hope had roared back to life, and he'd said a small prayer of thanks...He didn't even care that she was 'supposedly' living with two men in the French countryside...


If it turned out that the woman the reporter had photographed was Leigh, he and the two men harboring his lady love had a lot to talk about...But after rearranging their faces of course.

He watched his sister and J.D. make their rounds, and graciously accept the warm wishes from the party goers, and he couldn’t help but resent them a little. He envied them. They were in love, and happy. They had each other, while his search for Leigh continued because Jacqueline had decided to play God with his life...He didn't have proof of course, and that's the only reason her face was still intact, and her mouth was still full of her sharp fangs...

Even Devon and Eloise were happy with the news of their baby. It just felt like his life was falling apart; the walls were closing in on him. He was drowning amidst the sea of faces, and it would take Leigh’s loving grasp to pull him back to safety. And so he would hang in there, for as long as he could, until he found her…Or until she came home. Whichever one occurred first. But giving up on her was not an option. He’d invested too much in their relationship; and he loved her too much to walk away…
