Bridgeport, present day

“I thought you couldn’t have kids,” Leigh murmured softly, drawing circles on his chest. They’d just made love, and instead of falling asleep in each other’s arms like they always do, they were both restless.

They both couldn’t believe how quickly the last three months had flown. Any second now he’d get a call informing him Jacqueline was in labor, and he’d have to rush to the hospital to be with her.

They’d hardly talked after her blackmail stunt. He’d gone to the hospital with her a few times, seen his baby through ultrasound scan, and heard its heartbeat. But he still didn’t feel any connection to it. They had yet to discover the sex since it was always in a strange position, hiding from them. He didn't blame the poor thing. If he had a mother like Jacqueline, he’d hide too.
Things between them were civil, but he knew her silence could only mean she was plotting something, no doubt still scheming about separating him from Leigh. She can try and take her best shot! He thought angrily, and his arms unconsciously tightened around Leigh.

“What’s wrong?” She asked.

“Nothing,” was his standard answer of late. Everything was fucking wrong. It should have been Leigh carrying his child, and not that witch!

“So...how come you can have kids?” Leigh asked again. How did he start breaking down centuries of myths in an hour or a day into manageable wholes she could make sense of?
“Vampirism is a genetic condition, Leigh. Contrary to your people’s beliefs we are not undead. We are just born with the vampire gene responsible for our immortality. Unfortunately the same gene makes us averse to light, heightens our senses and gives us superhuman strength and abilities. We can still reproduce like ordinary humans, but the gene is passed down, hence our long line of immortals…”

“If you can live forever why did you let Laura die? Didn’t you want to spend eternity with her?” She asked curiously.

Laura…He always knew they’d drift back to her some day.
“Laura was born with the ION syndrome, insane, over emotional and neurotic. The first year with her was great. But the last three were devastating. She was slowly losing her mind, her brain cells were deteriorating at an incredible pace, and doctors couldn’t help her. She’d forget everything including her name, and taking care of her basic needs.

Some days she’d be lucid and she’d know what was going on. We’d treasure those days, and try to prolong the hours for as long as we could, because they were few and far in between.

But the days she didn’t remember were hell. For hours she’d lock herself in her room, threaten to harm herself and each time I’d have to go in there and drag her out. It was exhausting physically and emotionally.
She too, was tired, and she begged me lots of times to help her end things, but I kept refusing. Until I woke up one day and realized I was being selfish by keeping her with me. Half the time she wasn’t there, her life was lonely and empty. She once described her life as a ‘terrible darkness’ and I was forcing her to face it alone, because when she was in that state, no one could reach her, not even me.

I thought about what she said, and I realized I felt exactly the same way. It’s lonely being immortal Leigh, it’s a dark and scary place, especially when you form connections with mortals, and you have to watch them age, and die while you stay the same. If someone could do it for me, help me end things I would take that chance.” He would have continued, but she cut him off.
“Don’t say that! I don’t ever want to hear you say you want to end things. You have so much to look forward to,” she slapped his arm gently.

“Ouch,” he pretended to be hurt, and she heard his smile in the darkness, and she smiled back at him. “That was then Leigh…That’s how I felt then. The day Laura died, we’d just finished performing and Eugi’s, and when I got back she wasn’t home. I looked everywhere, called everyone until I found her on the cliff...
Laura always mismatched her clothes, showing her chaotic frame of mind, but when I found her, she was wearing her favorite dress. Her hair was done up the way she liked it, and she looked perfect, except for her bare feet. I remembered what she’d said a few weeks before. She’d told me if she got her break, that one day when she remembered everything, she’d take her chance and there’d be no stopping her. I knew then she’d gotten her break, and I asked her to change her mind but she wouldn’t. I could have easily pulled her from the cliff. But she was exhausted, had been for the last three years, and I loved her enough not want to see her suffer so much…so I stayed back, and watched her take the plunge. It killed me to let her go…But she’d found peace, and it was her choice.”
For a while Leigh didn’t know what to say. The media had sensationalized Laura’s death, insinuating Krisis was responsible for her death; his endless affairs had pushed her over the edge. But no one knew the truth because the Frosts had hid her condition well. She retired from acting soon after the doctors confirmed nothing could be done to reverse her condition, and her public appearances grew sporadic. Only their inner circle knew she was sick. If  the media had found out, they would have had a field day. By keeping everything hush-hush, the Frosts ensured she held on to the little dignity she still had left.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered at last. He must have really loved Laura…to go through such lengths, take the fall, and let the media crucify him.

“Don’t be. It wasn’t your fault.” He kissed her nose tenderly, before covering her body with his. He wanted her again. She was ready and she welcomed him.
Later though she still had more questions.

“Couldn’t you help her? By turning her?” She asked.

“The immortality gene is not a cure Leigh. Turning her wouldn’t have helped. In fact it would have made things worse. She would have inherited the immortality gene, but it would not have cured the disease, so she would have been insane till eternity. Like Vladimir. The problem with him is that he drank from Laura, and drinking impure blood is lethal for any vampire. He took in her impurities, and that’s why you always got the sense that he was crazy, when he held you captive. Laura warned me from the start about the possibility of her having inherited the condition from her father and I never drank from her.”
Before she could ask any more questions, he planted a long, passionate kiss on her lips, silencing her. He didn’t want to talk anymore. He just wanted to feel…And they did, until Leigh fell asleep.
An hour later, he finally got the call. He was about to be father…

  8. Karen,

Thank you. I'm always, always hesitant about constructing vampire history, in the face of the awesomeness you throw into your stories.

  11. - I just love the bond that these two share, physically and emotionally!

    - I am glad that he is able to talk to Leigh about what happened with Laura, I am sure it is great therapy to him.

    - Now that the baby is coming I can only imagine what our dear lovely Dr. Jekyll has planned now, though she outta be slapped for using a child as leverage against Krisis, who the hell does that? Not anyone sane that's for sure!

    - Excellent chapter!
