039. Taste

Bridgeport, present day...

Dinner at the Schlick manor was an extravagant affair. They sat on a table long enough to accommodate ten people, tall, silver candleholders and fine china decorated the oak surface. Vladimir looked even more deadly now in the candlelight, the flames casting shadows on his dark face. 

Leigh felt awkward and uncomfortable under his constant scrutiny. The dress made her look like a cheap hooker, it was too tight, and her breasts were spilling out, no doubt exciting Vladimir. She felt like a piece of meat on display at Meat Co, Bridgeport’s biggest butchery store, and she hated him all over again.

She shuddered to think what was in store for her. Thank heavens he hadn’t touched…not in that way…Not the way Krisis had. Tears stung her eyes when she thought of him, and remembered how gentle he was with her, how beautiful their union was.

Defiantly she stared back at Vladimir and studied him…really studied him, wondering what Laura had seen in him…

On the surface he was handsome, in a dark sort of way; but his strong jaw line, the dark creases between his brows, and the strained lines around his mouth gave the impression of a ruthless man who rarely smiled. His eyes though, the windows to the soul, were the biggest give away. They were intensely bright, and filled with hollowness so profound, it scared her; she wanted to look away but she couldn’t, he kept luring her in, inviting her into the darkness lurking beneath the surface, and then deeper into his core, where evil resided.

 “How is the lobster? Dora prepared it especially for you. I told her it’s your favorite,” Vladimir chatted animatedly, oblivious to her pained silence.

She picked at her meal, unable to bring herself to shove it in her mouth. She was allergic to sea food, and she hated the sight of Lobster, so big and red, dead eyes ogling her.

“You’re not eating,” Vladimir observed. He put down his fork and knife and wiped his mouth with the napkin, before throwing it carelessly on the table.

“I’m allergic to sea food,” she whispered.

“Nonsense Laura, you love Lobster!” He insisted, and when she slowly shook her head, his face darkened. He rammed his fists on the table, the fine china shook, silverware rattled, and she held her breath, waiting for this tide of anger to subside. But it didn’t go away.

“Eat your food. Dora made this especially for you, and you don’t want her to think you’re ungrateful do you?” He murmured. His voice sounded calm, but she knew better, the darkness was slowly building up again in his eyes.

Wordlessly she shoved the food in her mouth, tears streaking down her cheeks as she forced it down.

“Oh God,” she gasped, and gagged, once the first bite had settled in her quivering stomach, leaving a bitter taste in her mouth. She could already feel her skin break out in a horrible rash.

“Now, was that so hard dear?” He smirked, before bringing the glass of wine to his lips…
