120. Into the Fire

Bridgeport, present day
Michaela sat in her car, unable to bring it to life.
She knew coming there was a mistake, but when Cam missed band practice again, she’d worried.
Krisis wasn’t impressed with him, throughout practice he’d kept swearing and kicking his drum set, talking about replacing him and that’s when she’d decided to sneak out and tell Cam to get his shit together.
They’d grown close over the past few weeks and she didn’t want the band to replace him. He was her friend, he understood her, and she liked him.

The truth was though, what she felt for him was much stronger than ‘like’. A mere look from him made her legs all wobbly, his smile filled her tummy with butterflies and his touch, as innocent as it may have been in the past, always left her hot and bothered and confused. Like now, when he’d pushed her away after he’d almost kissed her.
She knew she hadn’t imagined their moment, the electricity between them. She’d never felt anything like it before, not for Jett Atkins and definitely not for Leo, she’d never wanted anyone to kiss her as much as she’d wanted Cam’s kiss.
A burgundy Audi Q7 pulled up a few parking spots away from her, stopping all thoughts of the kiss that never was.

Liza, Cameron’s ex, seemingly back in his life again, jumped out.
Michaela watched her grab an overnight bag from the backseat of her car, disliking her all over again with each step she took towards the building, hating every moment she’d spend with Cam doing things she only read about in her romance novels.
“Bitch,” Michaela cussed under her breath and started her car.

At the door, Liza turned around just in time to see her drive off. She waved at her, but Michaela ignored her, hitting her foot hard on the accelerator.
She didn’t want to go home. She couldn’t deal with her parents. Her mom was in a funk lately, she was constantly mad at her father, she could hear them arguing late into the night. Something about SWAT and Barnacle Bay. She hoped they’d sort it out soon, before her eighteen birthday in a few weeks. She wanted no ill feelings at her party.
She was glad to see Leigh’s old wreck in the driveway when she got to Krisis’ place on the cliff. They hadn’t moved to their new house yet, they were waiting for the sale to be finalized. She knew her aunt couldn’t wait; she was itching to start decorating the nursery and prepare for the birth of the triplets.
“Aunt Leigh?” She yelled from the entrance. It was becoming a habit, letting herself into other people’s homes. She hoped Leigh wouldn’t chase her away like Cameron had.
“In here,” Leigh called out from Lily’s room.
They were on the floor, reading some fairytale or other and she walked in just in time to catch her aunt finish off with the famous, “and they lived happily ever after!”

“Moar!” Lily squealed at Leigh to keep reading, clapping her chubby little hands.
“Again? Okay, okay. For the last time though, I still have laundry to do and it’s late, you should be sleeping,” Leigh dropped a quick kiss on Lily’s forehead, before reading through the book again.
Michaela left her aunt and cousin and wandered through the house.
She had no interest in listening to fairytales. She’d found her Prince Charming, but he was out of reach, so way out of her league and if he was serious about her staying away from him, she’d have no happily ever after.
A little while later, with Lily sleeping and the laundry done, they sat down for a late supper.
Leigh asked her about Leo.
Michaela made it clear she didn’t want to discuss him. They were over. She’d been stupid to even think he was the one.
She remembered the first few weeks after their breakup. She’d never felt such heartache and she didn’t want to go through it again, she’d been so sure the hole in her heart would never close. But then Cameron came along with his goofy jokes, and his harsh, unsolicited words of wisdom. He’d told it like it was, and made her see there was so much more to life than being sad over a guy who’d cheated on her with one of her best friends because she wasn’t putting out for him.
He’d listened when she’d needed to cry, but he’d never coddled her, not even once, and she knew it was his tough love attitude that had gotten her through everything.
“Can I ask you something?” Michaela asked Leigh as she cleared the dishes on the table.

“Sure,” Leigh replied casually.

“Do you think age can be a problem in a relationship?”
Leigh sagged against the sink, wishing she could stop Michaela. She didn’t want to hear it. It was about Cameron. Krisis was right. And she wanted no part of it.
She was about to tell her niece to stop when she caught the look in her eyes. She seemed so vulnerable and confused.

Her heart went out to her, she really wanted to help her, but she was the last person to give advice. Hell, her own relationship was in tatters and she had no clue why or how to fix it. Krisis was blowing hot and cold, and he was driving her insane. One minute he wanted to be close to her, and the next he’d suddenly withdraw and shut down.
“So?” Michaela prodded, reminding Leigh this wasn’t about her. Her own problems could take the back burner for a while.
“This is about Cameron isn’t it?” Leigh decided to cut to the chase. No use in beating around the bush. She saw the look in Michaela’s eyes. She was caught out, on the spot and she couldn’t deny it.
“Maybe,” Michaela replied in a small voice.
Leigh closed her eyes, waiting for the shock to pass; she knew the ‘maybe’ was definitely a 'yes'. Michaela was asking for trouble, she’d get burned. Badly. And she had no clue how to tell her to let Cameron go without sounding like Devon.
“Look. It isn’t my place, and I can’t tell you what to do. But the age difference between you two is really huge,” Leigh began, but Michaela was ready for her.

“Not as huge as it is between you and Krisis. He’s exactly 187 years older than you, and there’s just 115 years between me and Cam.”
“It’s not the same thing Michaela. You’re still underage.” Leigh tried to explain, but her niece cut her off again.

“I’ll be eighteen in six weeks.”
“It sounds like you’ve already decided what to do about him,” Leigh snapped.
“Of course not! And it’s not Cameron in any case,” Michaela lied.
They fell into an uncomfortable silence, both tried to fill it up with uncertain smiles and frustrated sighs.

“Let him go. Your parents won’t allow it. Krisis won’t.” Leigh murmured at last. She busied herself by packing away the dishes.
“I’ll be eighteen soon. I won’t need their permission then,” Michaela hissed.
Leigh stared at her, trying to figure out this stranger in front of her. She’d changed. She seemed to know what she wanted and how to get it. There was a calm, self-assurance about her that wasn’t there before. And it broke Leigh’s heart to see she was no longer a child, she was no longer the sweet, teenage girl she remembered. But she wasn’t an adult either. She was caught in between and about to jump head on into the fire.
How did she stop her and make her see?
“Cameron won’t entertain it either,” Leigh added, hoping it would shock Michaela back to her senses.
Michaela didn’t reply. Her silence spoke volumes. Something had happened between them, but she would never say what. On second thought Leigh thought it was better she didn’t know, that way when the shit hit the fan and Krisis found out, she’d be able to deny knowing anything.
Lily’s screams in the baby monitor on the counter broke some of the tension. Leigh was grateful for the distraction; she went to check on her. Michaela decided to leave then. Leigh wished she wouldn’t. There was a lot that was still unsaid between them, a lot left unresolved.

  1. She's struggling so much, just as much as Cam on what's right and wrong but she knows her heart and what she wants.

Krisis is going to throw a fit, JD and Krimsyn as well. I like that she is still able to talk to Leigh about things (even though she lied and denied the fact that it was Cam though it was obvious). She really does need someone that can understand her feelings.

She is right, she will be a legal adult soon and nothing anyone says at that point will matter. It's not their decision, hearts, or bodies and you cannot control who you fall in love with.

I thought her little jealous moment was cute. It made me giggle :)

Awesome update! Again nailed the psych stuff! Her teenage quandary and mix of emotions is amazing to read.

  2. This is one complicated situation. I understand their concern but Michaela raised a good point. There is a huge gap between Krisis and Leigh. Michaela is underage...right now...but in six weeks she will be legally able to make her own decisions.

They have all seen that you can't deny love! You can just blow it off and pretend it's not there. If that's what she feels for feel for him, then how can they expect it to just blow over or stop it in it's tracks.

Long road ahead of them! If Michaela has her mind made, A VERY LONG EXCITING ROAD!

  3. :'( Oh noes...I feel so bad for her! They both care about each other so much and yet they can't be together?!

Lily. Is SO. CUTE. AAARGH. Seriously, so cute it hurts a little. I loved leigh reading her a bedtime story it made me happyful. I can't wait for these triplets to be born already! THEY'RE GOING TO BE SOOOOO CUTE I CAN FEEL IT! I so cannot wait. Two girls and a boy right? Awwww....

And Krimmy/JD are still having troubles? I think he should re-join swat if its what makes him happy you know. He can look after himself! Right? He's trying to tell himself that he doesn't need it, doesn't want it and he does. Ooh noes.

BUT, back to CaMichaela (see what I did there?! See it?!); Cam needs to get rid of Liza lia whatever her names is ASAP because it angers me >:( I do not like this girlfriend character. Grr. Raow.

Anyways, excellent chapter. You got all that frustrated teen angst excellently!

Seeing micheala's heart being broken is horrible. And I'm not really liking liza anyway, I hope she gets out of the picture quickly or I'm sure micheala will do that (haha).

  5. 1.Seems like everyone's world is falling apart lately.

2.I laughed at Lily's "Moar" I'm guess that's her favorite book.

3.I don't like that Liza character, she looks like she should be a bouncer for a heavy metal club or some other Bad-ass chick.

4.Leigh seems to be backed in too both corners, helping with Michaela's "crush" and her relationship with a Krisis on overload.

  6. The forbidden fruits always taste better. Michaela's feeling of a chemistry between herself and Cameron might be that she sensed the fruit. I just hope she does not become defiant the more she's told to stay away from Cameron. Michaela is really so young and inexperienced. Seventeen years and forty-six weeks old, compared to an adult for nearly one hundred years, leaves a lot of life experience missing. I would like to see the friendship blossom over time and evolve. A secret, hidden relationship would be exciting, but I feel badly for Cameron. He's the one I see being hurt the most in this. I just fear if she pushes things now, their possibility of a future together would disappear. This is bound to be full of excitement, danger and injured hearts. Thank you for sharing this world; it's imaginative, well planned and very entertaining.

  7. Dj,

Yeah she is struggling as much as Cam, but she's going through so many changes too at the same time. What she thinks she feels may not really be that. Both of them do need to step back and think a little more, allow each other some space.

Michaela's grown very close to Cam lately, he was there for her when she needed someone, he helped her through the break up, so she may just be transferring a little on him too or she may be confusing her feelings of gratitude for love. Or she may really be in love with him.

She's going through her transformation too and her senses, esp her emotions are heightened to a ridiculous point and maybe to a point of blurring the lines between reality and what's in her head.

Cam on the other hand, being older and wiser, knows what he wants, it's def her, but the age difference is just too huge, as much as it won't matter if they are fated to be together and being vampires, he just can't ignore it and he can't risk her parents' wrath. For now, that is.

Krisis and her parents won't stand for it, that's for sure, esp when they know Cam and his past relationships track record. She and Leigh will always have that closeness, and she thinks of Leigh as more of a friend than an aunt and that can be good when she needs someone she can trust.

In six weeks she will be an adult, but a lot of things happen before then that rock her world and change things for her, esp where she and Cam are concerned.

Now that Liza's seemingly back in his life, she'll have lots of those moments.

Thank you, I'm glad you think so. I don't know what teenagers feel, and getting to Michaela's head is an uncomfortable trip for me.

  8. Qui,

You are right, it is complicated and there are no easy answers for any of them. The point she made about the age difference is valid. But the real issue here is that she's underage right now and if anything were to happen, Krisis and her parents would skin Cameron alive. But, in six weeks, when she's legally an adult, no one can have any say in what she chooses, not that they won't voice their opinions of course or oppose the relationship.

True, Krisis and Leigh should know better and perhaps should be a little sympathetic to their situation since their love's been opposed from the start, but again, the real issue is Michaela being underage and the huge age difference.

Yes, a very long, scary road! I'm so scared for the two of them :(

  9. Eni,

As much as they care about each other, right now Cameron won't be crossing any lines.

Aw, I'll accept the compliment on her behalf. It's amazing how much she looks like her mom. The triplets will only make an appearance at the end of the season and this is one is a little longer than Season 3. And yes, it's two girls and a boy.

Yes, Krimsyn and Jd are still caught in their SWAT debate. rejoining SWAT will have negative implications for the band. It will make JD happy, but it may signal the end for the band.

I do and I love it. Team CaMichaela all the way, I see :) Now that Liza is back, it may be just a little harder to get rid of her.

Thank you, that means a lot to me since I always marvel at how well you capture your teens' feelings.

  10. Beth,

    Thanks :)

Mickey's confused and vulnerable right now and it's not a pretty sight. Cameron will feel much worse if he knew what she's going through. Liza's back in Cam's life, but you're right, not for long though if Mickey has any say in it.
It's so scary how much Lily looks like her mom. And def the adorable part didn't come from Jackie, that's for sure.

    Thanks for reading Beth.

  11. Leah,

    1. It does, doesm't it?
    2. It's Cinderella and it's her favorite.
    3. Liza is Bad ass, and she has the potential of starting her own bad ass band. She just might.
    4. Leigh is caught in hard place right now.

    Thanks for reading.

  12. Gave my reply on the forum! Loved it like always Val!

  13. Zhi,

    Don't they just! LOL.

Exactly, she def sensed more from him and she's holding on to that. But like I said to Dj, while his feelings are crystal clear since he's older and of sound mind, hers are a bit confused and messed up. She's going through a lot of changes right now, and she may be confusing her dependency on Cam over the past few weeks to help her through her breakup from Leo, with love. She may be over romanticizing her feelings for him too. Or she may genuinely be in love with him. It's a rough period for her and only time will walk her through it.
And that's true about the age difference, and it's what scares the hell out of Cameron too. That's so true, right now, with her being underage, if anything were to happen, it would ruin their chances of being together in future.

Thank you, and thanks for all your help with the lyrics. I appreciate it more than I can ever express. You are a life-saver!

  15. I really like Micheala. When she is eighteen, she can make her own decision. They have to realize that she is very mature for age. The way that she handled her relationship with Leo proved that.

I can tell that Leigh is getting frustrated with Krisis. He better tell her soon!

I loved it like always! Can't wait till next update.

  16. 11daisies,

I love her to bits and I'm glad your find her likeable. You're right, when she's eighteen her parents won't have a say in what she chooses, but it doesn't mean they'll be all for it. And I agree, she is mature for her age.

Yes, the stress of being held at arm's length is mounting up on her side, and it doesn't help that Krisis keeps shutting her out.

    Thank you.

  17. Micheala is such a pretty girl I hate to see her troubled like this -

I smiled at the age difference part lol - It's gross really - Leigh should be utterly repulsed - but we all know Krisis is a honey

    ReplyDelete
  18. Kalene,

Ah, I can just kiss you for that. It is sad seeing her so troubled, she's at a confusing time in her life, coming of age, transforming into a fully fledged vampire and on top of that she has the added stress of school and her finals. Her life's suddenly grown complicated and she's figuring things out and what it all means.

That's the appeal isn't it, a man with experience, and a vampire at that. LOL. On a serious note though, the age difference is huge for both sets of couples, but like Leigh pointed out, she was of consenting age when she and Krisis got into a relationship.

    Thanks for reading!

  19. =o Hmm i dont really know what to say other then that fact that i could pretty much feel the tension between them >.< Ooww...
I dont really want her to be with him...Its too weird...

  20. Rose, lol, I understand. At this point we'll have to wait and see how it plays out. Thanks for reading :-)

  21. It's heart-wrenching seeing Michaela so torn and confused, but it is something that we all go through at some point.

I lol'd @ how Michaela threw out the numbers for the age differences, even though I'm sure she knew what Leigh really meant.

I think that Michaela can do so much better than Cam, she deserves so much more that is for sure, but she is going to be 18 soon and I know that her family wouldn't be easily accepting of her and Cam being together...but I do think she is at the age where maybe her family needs to loosen the reigns a little and let Michaela think and feel for herself...how will she ever learn if they don't allow her to make her own decisions, especially when it comes to what she wants...or think she wants.

    Excellent chapter!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Jenn,

That's so true. We all go through the figuring things out phase, but hers is a little different because she's not just dealing with teenage angst and raging hormones, she's going through her transformation too, a scary, uncertain period for fledgling vampires.

She just had to be scientific about the whole thing, throwing numbers at Leigh like that, but you're right, she knew exactly what Leigh meant, and it was her way of counter arguing against's Leigh's point.

I beg to disagree on that point. Cameron, as old as he is, with all his experience would probably treat her way better than guys her age, classic example being Leo, her ex boyfriend. But she does deserve to live and experience life too.

Her family will def not be easily sold on the idea of the two of them, and it might even cause a lot of friction in the band, but Michaela is a spirited young girl who seems to know what she wants, and right now she wants Cameron, and there is nothing anyone says or do that will change her mind.

Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed them.

  23. I think Michaela does make a good point when she points out the age difference between Leigh and Krisis--it seems with vampires, the difference can be so vast it nearly becomes irrelevant. But I don't want to see her get hurt--she does seem quite vulnerable.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Seaweedy she is vulnerable and confused, and starting anything with Cameron right now would most likely end in tears. And I like what you said about the age difference with Vampires. I couldn't have put it better :)
    Thanks for reading.
