75. Heart

Bridgeport, present day...

Sasha Nielsen was a woman with a plan. The next few weeks she learned as much as she could about her new job, and the workings of the different hospital wards. Her colleagues did not find anything wrong with her curiosity and her endless questions. They thought her enthusiasm was cute, and they naturally assumed she wanted to get better at her job and she was obviously trying to get into Mrs. Reynolds’ good books.

Sasha made a point of making friends with all the key people, from the cleaners, right through to the nurses in the pediatrics wing, located across the Records building.

Everyone loved her bubbly personality and her willingness to help. She was always the first to take the graveyard shifts no one else wanted, the first to swap her lunch breaks, and the first to help anyone who couldn’t complete their work fast enough.

She was a girls’ girl, and a guys’ dream. Everyone liked her, and everyone had something good to say about her.  And the muffins she brought every Monday for the nurses in the pediatric ward were a huge hit.

Her friendships led her to rooms and places she normally wouldn’t have access to.  Her lunch breaks were fully booked. She spent her Mondays with Nelly, the other filing clerk, in the staff’s cafeteria.

Tuesdays, she ate out with Sally and Yvonne, the cleaners in the pediatrics wing. She even managed to earn herself a key to their break room.

Wednesdays she met Nurse Susan from pediatrics, and she cooed and ‘aaahed’ when her new friend talked about the newborns.

Thursdays she played a thirty minute match of “catch” with Nurse Smith, also in pediatrics. Sasha Nielsen even managed to swipe one of her uniforms when she’d left her locker unattended while she took a quick shower after one of their many matches. 

Thank heavens they were the same size.

Nurse Smith had complained very loudly about the theft, but a new set of uniform had quickly stifled her moans, and the incident was soon forgotten. Of course no one had reason to suspect a filing clerk, what would she need a nurse’s uniform for?

And on Friday nights she went out with her assortment of friends, the girls from pediatrics, and her colleagues in Records. She preferred sticking to the quieter parts of town where she wouldn’t be spotted, but soon her friends got bored, and they began venturing deeper into the heart of the city.

One scary Friday evening, she ran into Krimsyn Frost as the band was leaving Waylon’s Haunt after a 3 hour gig.

The Vampire stared straight into her eyes, a brief look of confusion mingled with recognition in her eyes, but it quickly disappeared when Susan addressed Tamsyn by her fake name, shouting at her to get a move on.

That close encounter with Krimsyn signaled the end of her Friday night escapades, but she kept the flames of friendships going strong at work. She couldn’t afford to let the friendships die. Especially Susan’s. She was the heart of her plan, and without her everything would go up in smoke…

On weekends, Sasha would go shopping. She bought baby clothes, and a few oddities which would help with her grand exit when the time came, and she always paid cash.

When she wasn’t plotting and scheming, Sasha was diligent in her work, going over and above the call of duty. She respected patient confidentiality, and didn’t access records she had no business accessing. Except for one. And she’d copied that file onto her memory stick. Once in a while though, she would take a peek at Eloise’s records, checking on the updated version of the file she had at home, noting upcoming visits to the hospital and any sudden hiccups.

Reading Eloise’s file had become her favorite past time in the evenings when she had nothing else to do at home. She noted the pregnancy progress; her heart lurched in her chest a couple of times when she saw the 4D scans of the baby. And she etched the baby’s due date in her chaotic mind. She ticked off the dates on the calendar on her dining table, noting how close to the end she was with each passing day. It wouldn’t be long now before she held baby Chad Starlington in her arms…Not long at all...
