________
Bridgeport, present day...
Later that evening, Tamsyn pushed through the lobby entrance of her apartment building, and she was instantly glad to be in doors, away from the chill outside. The weatherman expected temperatures to drop below -1 degree Celsius in the next few weeks.
Winter in Bridgeport was probably the only thing she’d hated about the energetic city. She hated feeling cold; and this was one of the reasons she’d chosen Barnacle Bay for her next home; 365 days of sunshine. Nothing beat that!
She mumbled a quick hello to Thomas, the security guard at the front desk, before rushing to the lift to take her to her apartment on the third floor.
She clutched the brown package tightly in her hands, holding on for dear life. The bag held her new identities: several pairs of disposable contact lenses she’d bought from different pharmacies around town, all different colors, and the wigs.
Inside the apartment, she turned on the kettle, changed into her flannel PJs, and made herself some coffee once the water had boiled. Half an hour later, sitting in front of the heater in the living room, she was deeply engrossed in the map of Bridgeport’s Medical Centre.
The diagrams were fairly simple, showing where the main facilities were; the map wasn’t as detailed as she had hoped it would be, but at least she would have a general idea of where the important rooms were to execute her plan. And if she miraculously got the job as filing clerk she wouldn’t even need the map, or the wigs and the different colored contact lenses. As Sasha Nielsen, she’d be free to come and go as she pleased…
Her disposable cell phone rang on the coffee table, and she jumped for it.
A Jane Moore was calling from Temps R Us, the agency. They’d secured an interview for her for the following day at the hospital. Their filing clerk in the Records’ department had to go on maternity leave suddenly. Some complications with her pregnancy. They needed a filing clerk to start as soon as possible. Was Sasha Nielsen interested?
Of course she was.
She’d be there tomorrow at 08:00am sharp. Yes, she knew where the hospital was, and no, she wouldn’t have trouble getting there, and of course she’d stop by the agency as soon as she was done at the hospital. Ordinarily she would have had to meet her consultant at the agency first, but these were unusual circumstances.
After ironing out a few minor details, and many thank yous from her end, Tamsyn rang off. She threw herself on the couch, and beamed up at the ceiling. Things were starting to fall into place…
