62. Spring

Bridgeport & Riverview, present day...

Tamsyn was tucked safely inside a bus to Riverview, ten minutes away from the crime scene, when the hospital’s pediatrics wing was put on lockdown at 14:12pm.

Fifteen minutes away from Riverview, the baby woke up and began his incessant screaming. Tamsyn, with little experience with babies, didn’t know how to stop his angry cries. She tried to give him some formula, but he wouldn’t have it; she cooed at him, and sang lullabies but nothing soothed him.

“Ma’am? Is that your baby?” The large woman sitting next to Tamsyn asked.

“Of course he is!” She hissed back defensively.

The woman shook her head and made it quite clear to Tamsyn she didn’t buy her big lie.

“What?” Tamsyn glared at her.

It was bad enough the baby wouldn’t stop screaming, now people in the bus, including the fatty next to her, were giving her suspicious looks.

“He looks nothing like you, that’s all,” the lady continued to shake her head, frowning darkly at her.

“He looks like his daddy, you moron!” Tamsyn snapped.

Mistake number two. She shouldn’t have been abrupt with the woman; now she’d remember her horrible encounter in the bus with the blonde lady holding the screaming black baby, and no doubt she’d tell her friends about it…and if news of a missing baby came out she would be finished!

She tried to fix her mistake, but the large woman wouldn’t have any of it, she moved to another place, two seats in front of Tamsyn, and she was one of the first passengers to jump off the bus when they reached Riverview. Tamsyn tried to keep up with her so she could bribe her with money, but she’d vanished in the crowd.

For a crazy five minutes, Tamsyn stood amidst the chaos, trying to get her bearings.

If it was any other day, and at any other place, this moment in time would have been perfect. Spring had always been her favorite time of year. She loved bright colors, loved spending time in the sunshine, breathing in the heady fragrances from trees and flowers in bloom. To her, spring had always symbolized rebirth after months of dead things.

Dazedly she watched people rush off to their different destinations, busses pulled in and out of the depot, the different sounds and smells rattled her, and the baby’s continuous screaming overwhelmed her.

All she wanted, at that moment, was silence, but reality came knocking on her door then. She’d stolen a baby. Not just any baby, but Devon’s. Something she’d always wanted; someone she’d always cherish and love. She’d die first before she gave him up…
