79. Months

Barnacle Bay, present day...

Somewhere in Barnacle Bay, in a cabin overlooking Smuggler’s Beach, Beau Merrick wasn’t having a good morning. He had not had a good morning in a very long time, not since he left Bridgeport, at least.

“The sonofabitch!” He let out an enraged snarl, and hurled the newspaper on the floor. Bianca heard his cries of displeasure from the tiny bedroom, and she ran into the equally small kitchen to check on him.

“What’s going on?” She asked softly, tentatively touching his shoulder. Sometimes, there was no telling what he would do, or how he would react even to the kindest of her gestures when he was in his depressed states. And he had been getting into a lot of those lately.

She watched him fumble with his lighter as he tried to fire up his ninth cigarette that morning; his addiction knew no limits. She hated that he had started smoking again, hated the smell of nicotine on his breath when he kissed her, hated it on his fingers when he caressed her. Fuck, she hated everything about the god-awful habit. The smell always lingered on everything in the house, poisoning their already tainted lives...

Since his brother’s death, and since they had settled in Barnacle Bay, Beau was a totally different man. He was withdrawn and easily angered. Life on the island did not agree with him, and he was finding it hard to find work as a musician. She knew he was homesick, she could see it in his eyes. She’d suggested once or twice they should go back to Bridgeport, but he’d refused, reminding her Krisis was still there, and he would come after them the moment they showed their faces.

To be fair, Beau wasn’t the only one with adjustment issues. After eight months, she still hated the godforsaken pirate town. She missed her family and friends, but she missed being in the limelight even more. Here, they were nobodies...

Before she could wallow in self-pity and go down the path of destruction, Beau jerked his head to the newspaper strewn on the floor. She picked it up, and searched through the pages, until she found the reason for his anger.

The Frost/Summers engagement "special edition" took three fucking pages on the society section, covering the glitzy event. Tears shimmered in her eyes when she saw photographs of all their old friends and colleagues having a good time. There was blown up photo of Krimsyn and J.D. kissing shyly in front of the cameras, and an insert of Krisis with Jacqueline gazing up at him lovingly. There were no photos of Leigh.

“We should have been there. That should be our life!” Beau croaked bitterly, ramming his fists hard on the table. She flinched, bracing herself for his tirade. He always got this way whenever he read about the Frosts. And his rage would last for days.

It burned him to know K-Infinity had moved on after him, and found a replacement soon after he left. He hated every single one of them, especially Krisis. He yanked the newspaper from her, and glared at the other man’s face. Krisis was happy; he had a beautiful woman on his arm, and a cute little baby girl, while he was forced to live life on the run. It wasn’t right…and it was most definitely not fair.

Frost thought he’d gotten away with killing his brother. He’d better think again…He’d better hang on to Blondie and that precious little angel of his, while he still can. Beau thought bitterly, a plan already forming in his head.

“Start packing up. We’re going home!” He smiled briefly at Bianca, before making his way to the fridge to get plasma juice.

“I thought we can’t go back?” Bianca stammered, sensing a sudden shift in their situation, but unable to pinpoint the exact moment it happened.

“Things change. That’s our life those damn Frosts are living. We’re going back to claim what’s rightfully ours!” He replied, taking a sip from the pack.

“But Krisis, he’s after us…”

“He won’t be after us if we blindside him! Your endless questions are tiring. Start packing, we leave at first light tomorrow. Wrap up everything, say your goodbyes to your backward friends, and quit your job. No whining Bianca!” He threw the empty pack in the bin, and let out a loud cheer when he nailed it inside.

It was payback time. Beau thought as he lit up his tenth smoke for the day. He would hit Krisis where it would hurt the most. But first he had to leave him a warning message, let him know he meant business...
