92. Sloth

Bridgeport, present day

The stale smell of booze, and sex, hit Krisis hard when he walked into Ben’s office, unannounced.

The human, a dark haired, washed-out call girl he’d seen one too many times in the company of many a vampire, was leaning on the table, taking it from behind. Krisis felt her loud, high-pitched moans were disturbing, and he found himself wondering if she was truly enjoying it or if it was part of her services to give ego boosts too.

His friend never ceased to amaze him. He could have any woman he wanted, yet he always, always went for the ones he had to pay.

Ben was a private investigator, and the Frosts had known him for over thirty years. He’d done a few stints for them, including a background check on Leigh when Krisis first met her. But he was infamous for his philandering ways and lack of limits in his life.

“When you’re done humping, Ben, I’ll be in your quarters!” Krisis grunted, letting the door close behind him with a loud thud. Embarrassed smiles were plastered on their faces as both the PI and the call girl drew apart and turned to him.

“Shit, Krisis, why don’t you knock?” Ben tried to shield the girl.  But it was too late. Krisis’ piercing blue eyes had seen everything, and it was not an appealing sight.

 “Shit, Ben, don’t you have work to do?” He frowned at him, before making his way to Ben's private quarters in the basement.

Inside the room, Krisis paced for a while, before plopping himself on the worn armchair.

“Shit!” He cussed again, running agitated hands through his hair. He didn’t miss Ben’s life, fucking random groupies, and the abundance of everything, especially sex and blood. He missed Leigh. She was all he wanted, all he needed.

The past two weeks had taken their toll on him. He was a mess. K-Infinity was back in studio, working on their new album, After Dark. Lily was giving him sleepless nights with her colic. And Jacqueline was still her bitchy self, giving endless interviews, flaunting Lily in the limelight even though he’d asked her many times not to parade his child in front of the cameras and news hounds. The little free time he had left was spent looking for Leigh. And so far all his attempts had been futile.

“Really Krisis, you should have called!” Ben’s enraged cry when he walked into the room broke through his miserable haze. But he was unfazed. Nothing moved him. No one moved him. Except Leigh.

“Any luck on locating Leigh?” Krisis cut to the chase. He was paying him a fortune to find her, and he wanted results. He didn’t owe him any explanations for his unannounced visits. He’d drop in any time he damn well wanted.

“I’m working on it.” Ben retorted. He dropped in his chair, and busied himself on his laptop before mindlessly shuffling the stack of papers on the table.

Krisis could see right through his act. Ben didn’t have anything, despite giving him the number Leigh’s call had come from.  He had no freaking clue. No fucking lead. He was buying time, and it pissed him off.

“I’m not paying you to have ‘midday fucking sessions’ Ben. I want Leigh found, and soon. It’s been two weeks; you can’t tell me it’s so hard to do a simple trace!” He snapped, staring the other man down, silently willing him to say something so they could get into a brawl. He was spoiling for a fight, dying to jam his fists on anything. On anyone. But he settled for the Ben’s filing cabinet instead.

“Are you going to pay for that too?” Ben scowled at the dent he’d left on the cabinet.

“Add it to your fee!” Krisis replied angrily, before kicking the metal rack again.

“I don’t get you man, if you love Leigh so much, why didn’t you form a blood-bond with her?” Ben asked innocently. “Better yet, why didn’t you turn her?”

Krisis glared at him, unable to defend himself or justify his actions…Or lack of. There was no excuse. He should have formed a blood bond with her when he had a chance. He didn’t know how true it was though since he’d never bothered with the idea, but according to their folklore, a blood bond was formed when a vampire and a human exchange blood thrice within a short period, and it lets both the vampire and the human feel what the other feels, and it allows the vampire to sense his human.

If he’d formed one with Leigh,  she would never have left because he would have sensed what was on her mind, and felt her confusion and fear. He would have known where she was, and all this misery would have been long behind him. The next time I'm with her, I will.  He vowed silently…
