85. Determined

Bridgeport, present day

“Jacqueline!” Krisis barked as soon as he bounded in. He ran upstairs, opening and closing doors angrily, before rapidly making his way back downstairs. Both the shrew and his daughter were nowhere to be found.

He knew the green eyed witch was involved in Leigh’s hasty departure. She was hell-bent on coming between him and Leigh from the start. He really should have taken care of her when he had the chance… This was the last straw. He’d had enough of her control issues. He was going to break her fucking neck…

He went to her bar and poured himself a drink, going over the past few days in his mind. He should have made more effort to see Leigh, and spend some time with her, but Lily and Jacqueline had taken too much of his time these last few days. He hadn’t even seen his family.

His cell phone buzzed in his jeans’ pocket. He pulled it out, looked at the caller ID and groaned.

“I’m working on it, Devon!’ He growled into the phone.

“Well hurry up. I want Leigh back by sunset. I don’t care how you do it; this is your fault!” With that the line went dead, and Krisis collapsed on the couch.

He quickly dialed Jacqueline’s number; it rang a few times before she answered. He could hear Lily crying in the background.

“Where the hell are you Jacqueline?”

“Didn’t you get my note? I went shopping. We’re out of diapers!” She hissed on her end. Lily kept screaming, along with the cars speeding by in the background.

“Get your ass home! We need to talk!” He knew he was abrupt, and it wouldn’t fly well with Jacqueline but her feelings were the least of his concern.

He must have slept because when he opened his eyes, Jacqueline was leaning over him, caressing his face.

“Get away from me!” He shoved her off, and she crashed to the floor clumsily. She sat up, feeling shocked for a second or so before she quickly regained her composure.

“Where is she?” He asked, trying his damnedest to hang on to the last shreds of his self-control.

“Who?” Jacqueline fired back. But he saw it, the brief look of fear and panic in her eyes, the look that said it all. She knew.

“Let’s not play games. Leigh’s gone, and I know you had something to do with it! What did you do? What did you say to her?” He asked again. He kept trying to get into her head, and read her thoughts, but she effortlessly blocked him out. Perks of being an ancient vampire. She’d let him read only what she wanted him to know, no more and no less.

“Did it ever occur to you that maybe Leigh didn’t love you after all? Maybe this was all too much for her. You can’t expect her to be happy with Lily and our situation,” she purred, roaming her hands on his chest. She didn’t seem to get that the harder she tried to act sexy around him, the more unattractive he found her.

“Our situation? We don’t have a situation! I agreed to be in Lily’s life, not yours!” He pushed her hands away, his lips curling distastefully. He paced the room for a while before slowly walking to the fish tank. He gazed into the translucent depths, allowing the colorful fish to soothe him.

He knew she was lying through her teeth, he just couldn’t prove it. She must have threatened Leigh with the photos. He should have done something about those damn photos when he still had a chance.

Fuck!

“You listen to me good, Jacqueline, you’d better tell the whole truth now, because when I find Leigh, and I learn you did have something to do with this, I will kill you. Do I make myself clear?”

“Are you threatening me?” She asked, carefully sizing his worth as an opponent. The hardness in his eyes scared her, but she wouldn’t back down. She was too far gone in the game now.

“It’s not a threat Jacqueline. It’s a promise. I will kill you. I’ve done it before…”

He quickly went upstairs, snuggled Lily for a while before heading out. He had a long day ahead of him. Sunset was just a few hours away, and Devon was in a state. He’d better get started on tracking Leigh.
